James Barron, Piano : the Making of a Steinway Concert Grand. New York : Times Books, 2006. 280 pages, illustrated.
In this marvelously written and researched book, the author traces the making of a Steinway concert grand piano from the beginning of the process to the placement of the instrument as one of the 'instruments in residence’ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
A delightful blend of reportage, background information and human interest, this book is well worth reading for the music lover as well as anyone interested in such diverse disciplines as acoustics, wood-working, engineering, and economics, to name but a few.
Technology and art coincide in this work which ought not to be missed.
