When The Levee Breaks (Calgary Flood 2013)

Calgary is in the midst of massive flooding right now, due to huge recent rains.

Riverbanks are eroding, paths and even sections of highways are being completely washed away, homes are being evacuated, whole towns and neighborhoods are inaccessible; this shot was taken about 10 minutes from my house, in Fish Creek Park, along what used to be a pleasant riverside footpath but is now floodplain approximately waist high at the outer edges!

I left Beefy and all my electronics (except my camera!) safely tied to a tree just off the path before the flooding began, and waded in as far as I was able. There was a very strong current and debris from houses, trees, plants, etc was just being swept along by it.

There were also ducks and geese and even a couple swans in the river just being hopelessly swept along by the current!

The water level rose by a good couple of inches just in the time it took me to snap these photos, so I know this is probably just the beginning!

I hope we don't have to evacuate!

Also, the weather is currently quickly shifting between hot sun and rainshowers, so II expect we are in for quite a sunset tonight!

Hope you are all having a fun and safe week, my friends!
