Moonstone images - fluorescence

Left: white light
Centre: 368nm LED excitation
Right: 254nm Hg excitation
The red fluorescence is due to Fe3+ replacing some Al3+ in the crystal structure and so is emitted from the entire stone. The green fluorescence comes only from the inclusions within the stone with nothing from the clear parts of the crystal. The blue schiller in the white light image is distributed throughout the clear volume.
