John H. Martin

The Moss Landing Marine Labs boat the R/V John H. Martin heading out to get some IOP (Inherent Optical Properties) of waters in the northern part of Monterey Bay. We took off in a short whaler (a skiff) to get IOP's of water about .5 nautical miles to 1 nautical mile west iof the mouth of the harbor.

John H. Martin was director of the Moss Landing Marine Labs for 18 years, and brought it to be a major marine research institute. He is most remembered for the pioneering research he led on the role of phytoplankton in the earths climate, iron limitation of phytoplankton in the ocean and the role of iron limitation in past ice ages. All of this and more he accomplished despite having sufered from disabilities caused by childhood polio.
