Assisting Don White At Blue Geyser, Porcelain Geyser Basin ...

In 1980 I was lucky enough to accompany the naturalist at Norris Geyser Basin out to the middle of Porcelain Basin to help USGS geologist Don White take water samples from Blue Geyser. It's a big round pool that can have 10-60 foot splashes, and they were occurring as he sampled. To get there , the naturalist had us walk behind him as he tapped the ground with a long pole to check for hollow or fragile spots. The whole area was dotted with steam vents, small spouters, and very dangerous ground.It was like going back in time several million years...
