Crater Spring Erupting 1983
Crater Spring was a quiet hot spring with clear water until these eruptions began in 1983.It began frequent jetting eruptions to 20 feet at an angle, and the water was extremely muddy. You can't see it in this photograph, but there was another water jet erupting at an angle opposite from the one visible here, making it a V-shaped eruption. You can see the trail past the geyser has been drenched, and shortly after this shot was taken, the naturalists re-routed the trail for safety reasons. Crater Spring is located in the Back Basin section of Norris Geyser Basin, in Yellowstone Park.
By 1984, Crater Spring was back to being a quiet spring.
