Cladina rangiferina

Stunning scanning electron micrograph of Cladina rangiferina, one of the species I studied in my work on lichen morphology and morphogenesis.

What causes branching in this species? Why do the branches tend to point downward?

The specimen shown here is about 2 mm in diameter.
