Eclipse of the Sun

Detail of a scan (cropped and enchanced with textures) from the book River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West, Rebecca Solnit, 2004.

This photo collage showing the stages of an eclipse of the sun was photographed for Leland Standford by Eadweard Muybridge at the Palo Alto Observatory on January 11, 1880, and was published by G. D. Morse.

Eadward Muybridge is famous for his still shots of a galloping horse, proving once and for all, at what point a running horse has all four feet off the ground.
