Hornbeam leaf images and spectra

Chlorophyll is responsible for photosynthesis in green plants and algae, using sunlight to synthesise sugars from carbon dioxide and water, and to release oxygen.
The image shows a scan (on a flatbed scanner) of a young, spring beech shoot. The spectra (above) show the transmission (green line) and the fluorescence (red line) of the chlorophyll in the leaf.

Actually, I think this is hornbeam and not beech. (Aug 2012)
