Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral Experiment/Art: Partiyte_2 - UVc

From the basement lab comes this 4" wide specimen. "The Fluorescent Planet".

On an aluminum tray containing a thin bed of salt and sodium metasilicate, ZnS:Cu, CaS:Mn,Pb and SrS:Pb were spread in a thin layer. The ZnS (zinc sulfide) was place in the 12-4 o'clock zone, the SrS (strontium sulfide) was placed in the 4-8 o'clock zone and the and the (calcium sulfide) was placed in the 8-12 o'clock zone. The sample was then heated with a MAPP torch until most of the salt had melted.

The ZnS precipitate (prior to heating) consisted of zinc chloride, magnesium sulfate and malachite combined in a sodium carbonate solution, filtered and dried.

ZnS:NaCl (1;2), SrS:NaCl (1:3), CaS:NaCl (1:3) | XCO3(1) + S(1) + NaCl(n)

Contains:
SrS (FL+PHOS!! White,Yellow,Greenish yellow >UVa,b,c)
CaS (FL+PHOS Orange >UVabc)
ZnS (FL Green/Orange/Blue >UVabc)

Shown under UVc light.

Key:
WL = White light (halogen + LED)
FL = Fluoresces
PHOS = Phosphorescent
Blue = 450nm,
UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)
'>' = "stimulated by:", '!' = "bright", '~' = "dim"
