Spring from Daphne, New York, NY

This emblema, or center panel, to a larger mosaic floor comes from an American excavation of some luxurious homes at Daphne near Antioch (currently Antakya in Turkey) in 1937. The panel, on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's newly renovated Greek Galleries, dates from Imperial Rome, 2nd Century AD, when Daphne was a resort for the rich. Often referred to as a representation of Spring, this woman, with her floral wreath and garland, is more likely a personification of abundance.

A companion mosaic from the same excavation and home can be found in the Baltimore Museum of Art.
