Wan-Hoo and His Rocket, about 1500 AD

According to legend, Wan Hoo was a minor Chinese official — supposedly of the middle Ming dynasty (16th century) — who attempted to use rockets to fly into outer space. The crater Wan-Hoo on the far side of the Moon is named after him.
